The grannies of Riemvasmaak have reason to celebrate their surroundings. In 1974 they and their families were forcibly removed to Namibia. It was not until 1994, and the coming of democracy that they were allowed to return to this starkly beautiful and remote area of the Kalahari. But while the wrinkles on their faces tell of hard times away from their natural home, the twinkle in their eyes tells a different story. They all remember the hot spring and how “the water will really heal you”. Now, carrying the aches and pains of old age, their delight at revisiting the hot spring is visible and infectious. The spring, which is used commercially today by curious tourists, may not be entirely as they remember it – for a start you have to pay to visit it. But they still believe “it is a medicine” that can cure these “lame ducks”. Set against open skies and red mountains, watch, cry and laugh as the characterful grannies of Riemvasmaak reconnect with the nature they had to leave behind |
